The Rotary Club of Ballarat joined forces with Ballarat Police, Ballarat Blue Light and Phoenix College to deliver the 17 session Blue Edge Program for 16 Year 7 to 10 Phoenix College students during Term1 this year.

An impressive graduation ceremony was held at Phoenix College with each student received a muchvalued certificate of course completion. The Rotary Club of Ballarat along with the local Rotary District contributed $6000 to help cover the costs of the program.

The Blue Edge program was conducted twice weekly starting at 7:00 am and was facilitated by Leading Senior Constable Des Hudson along with professional physical trainers, Anthony Ebery and Maxine Johnson.

Blue Edge aimed for the students to develop mind and body discipline; build team cohesion, social connectedness, and an awareness of their ability to achieve beyond their own expectations; foster a positive view and relationship with local police; promote positive decision making and strategies to reduce risk taking behaviour and to provide life skills and career education.

Each session involved a range of challenging and enjoyable physical activities designed to enable the students to pass the Victoria Police entry fitness tests. Teachers from Phoenix College and Victoria Police members, along with four student mentors also participated in each session.

Members of the Rotary Club of Ballarat contributed to the life skills and career education program. Topics covered by Rotary Club of Ballarat members included volunteering and opportunities for community service, mentoring, how to get a job, creating opportunities and communication.

The final event and program highlight was a day trip to Live Wire Park in Lorne for more challenging activities and fun. Despite the challenges of COVID19, the program was a great success with students averaging 88% attendance and many passed all elements of the Victoria Police entry physical fitness tests as well as gaining important life skills and developing new relationships.
