Ross Phillips - Training Med Students / Peter Dean - Ruby Award 23/2/23 Gallery

Dr. Ross Phillips provided us with a fascinating insight to his career of over 40 years as an anesthetist in Ballarat. Ross noted that anesthesia was only introduced in 1846 in Boston and in 1847 into Launceston, Australia. However, it was in the 1960's that specialist anesthetic services were established in Australia. Ross also gave us an, at times humorous, insight into his work in Papua New Guinea and his challenges in understanding pigeon English. Following his retirement from full time practice, Ross is now devoting his time to teaching in the University of Notre Dame medical program based at St. John of God Hospital, Ballarat. He sees this as a wonderful way to give back to his profession and encouraged all retired professionals to consider ways in which they can pass on their accumulated knowledge and wisdom to the next generation of their profession.
