National Youth Science Fair
Our guest speakers last week were our two National Youth Science Fair participants Cooper Brown and Arannatee Farid from Ballarat and Clarendon College. Both Cooper and Arannatee spoke in glowing terms about their experience at the Fair which was run using a hybrid mode of online forums and in-person activities at the University of Melbourne. Both were excited about keeping in touch with the large group of like minded friends they made during the Fair. Arannatee has her sights set on becoming an engineer and emphasized one of her main 'take aways' from the Fair being her increased knowledge of the extensive range of career opportunities engineering will open up for her. She was also inspired by discussions around women and science leadership and commented she would love to see herself in a leadership or mentoring role one day.
Cooper also commented on the eye-opening experiences gained from participating in the Fair. He aspires to a career in medicine and was amazed by his visit to the anatomical labs. A 'take away' for Cooper was his improved ability to link his school experiences with his career ambitions. Both students are setting themselves for a challenging Year 12 and aspire to attending the University of Melbourne. Thanks to our Youth Committee Chair, Peter Dunn for his great work in supporting the students.
